Colourful, multi-faceted and full of life – these words are a good way describe the works put on at the Volksoper Wien. The Volksoper Wien is home to over 150 singers, 95 orchestral musicians, 64 choristers and over 100 dancers. In 1898 it was opened as the “Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheater” (Emperor’s Jubilee City Theatre) and put on plays in its early years. In 1904 the Volksoper as we know it today was founded.

Ronacher Theatre & Raimund Theatre

The Ronacher Theatre was originally designed to offer an alternative to the imperial court theatres, but just a few years after opening it was destroyed by fire. Anton Ronacher rebuilt it in 1886 and ran it as a classical vaudeville theatre until the 1930s. Today it hosts successful long-run musical productions.

The Raimund Theatre was also originally a spoken-word theatre which was later turned into a musical theatre. Founded in 1893 as a suburban theatre staging spoken plays, it began putting on operettas from 1908. The theatre flourished after a general renovation in the 1980s, when the Broadway show A Chorus Line proved a huge hit with Viennese audiences.
